Vintage Mexican sterling silver post dangle earrings circa 1940s. These earrings are mixed metal, or “piedra negra” – inlaid with blue and black resin (or perhaps onyx) and feature turquoise-blue cabochon posts (note they are not turquoise gemstones). Piedra negra is a technique where mixed metals and stone (usually black onyx) are layered and pinned together to a silver backing. Toño was known for mastering this difficult process.
They are stamped “Hecho en Mexico”, “T140” (the design number), “piedra negra” and “sterling Taxco AC” (the mark of Cecilia, the Taxco retailer for whom Toño produced jewellery) and are hallmarked “Toño“. They are in excellent vintage condition.
